About Collingwood FC
Founded in 1892, the Collingwood Football Club is one of the oldest clubs in the AFL. In 1897 they split from the VFA with 7 other clubs (Fitzroy, Melbourne, St Kilda, Carlton, Essendon, South Melbourne and Geelong) to form the VFL, the year after they had won their first and only VFA grand final.
Affectionately named "the magpies" after the black and white guernseys worn by their players, the team has won 14 VFL/AFL premierships. They have been runners-up 24 times. They hold the record for the longest run of successive premierships, with 4 in a row between 1927 & 1930.
After winning the 1958 grand final, the club & followers had to endure a 32 year drought until their next premiership in 1990. During this period, the club contested no less than nine fruitless grand finals, inspiring the term "Colliwobbles" to signify a choking phenomenon. The closest they came to the flag was the 1977 Grand Final, which was drawn with North Melbourne and then lost the next week in the replay match.
Collingwood is now based at the MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground), with some "home" games played at the Telstra Dome. Their President is Eddie McGuire, coach is Michael Malthouse and Captain is Nathan Buckley - the 2003 Brownlow Medal winner. In 2002 & 2003 they finished 2nd on the ladder.
