About Gough Whitlam
Gough Whitlam served as Australian's Prime Minister from 1972 to 1975, after leading the Australian Labor Party to its first victory since 1946.
His federal political career began in 1952 after he was elected to the House of Representatives in his seat of Werriwa. He lead the Labor party from 1967 to 1977.
On November 11, 1975, Whitlam gained infamy by becoming the only Australian Prime Minister to ever be removed from office by the Governor General after being sacked by Sir John Kerr. He is famously quoted at the time as saying "God save the Queen, because nothing will save the Governor General".
After being removed from office, Whitlam continued to serve in Parliament before retiring in 1978. He was later appointed Australian Ambassador to UNESCO by the next Labor Prime Minister, Bob Hawke.
Whitlam was born in 1916 in Melbourne, Australia.
