About Molly Meldrum
Ian 'Molly' Meldrum has been a part of the Australian music industry family for over 40 years. While best known for his creation of Countdown, he has been involved in the entire industry, as a critic, journalist, record producer and musical entrepreneur.
Countdown ran for 13 years, and throughout that period showcased the finest and newest local and international talent. It was broadcast on the ABC.
In 1985, Meldrum was crowned the King of Moomba, and that same year became involved in Bob Geldof's "Live Aid" cause. As a result, he became the Australian Chairman of the project, hosting the 16 hour television marathon.
In 1986, Meldrum was awarded an "Order of Australia" for his services to music and charities, and was further recognised in 1992 for his services to the industry at the Australian Record Industry Association (ARIA) Awards.
2003 saw Meldrum appearing on a special charity episode of "Who wants to be a Millionaire?". He successfully answered the half million dollar question, showing a side that viewers had not previously been seen. The proceeds from his success were split equally between Kids Undercover and The Reach Foundation, which are his favourite charities.
He is an avid follower of the St Kilda football club, the "Mighty Saints". He is also passionate about all things Egyptian.
